Buying Guide

How to Choose Dining Room Furniture That Lasts

The most important decision in dining room furniture is material. Solid hardwood — the kind Penwood uses exclusively — will outlast any other furniture material available at any price. A solid maple dining table purchased today can reasonably be expected to remain the centrepiece of a family dining room for 50 to 100 years.

The second decision is size. Most people underestimate how much table they need. With 24 inches of width per person and 30 inches of length on the long sides, a table for six requires at least 72 inches (6 feet) of length and 36 inches of width. For comfortable entertaining, add 12 inches to the length. Our custom dining tables are built to any dimension — see our dining table sizing guide for exact specifications.

Finally, consider matching vs. mixing. A complete matched suite — table, chairs, and buffet all in the same species and finish — creates a dining room that feels designed. A curated mix of pieces in complementary tones creates a more eclectic feel. Our showroom team can help you plan either approach.
