Which Wood Species Is Best for Outdoor Furniture?
Not every hardwood belongs outdoors. Penwood uses only the three species proven to handle Ontario's full range of weather conditions — teak, western red cedar, and white oak.
Teak
The benchmark for outdoor wood furniture. Teak's natural oils make it inherently resistant to moisture, insects, and UV degradation without any treatment. It weathers to a distinguished silver-grey or stays honey-warm with periodic oiling.
Maintenance
Oil once per season to maintain colour, or leave untreated to silver naturally. No staining, sealing, or winterizing required.
Western Red Cedar
Naturally aromatic and rot-resistant, cedar is the traditional Canadian choice for outdoor furniture. Lightweight yet strong, it resists warping and cracking through Ontario's humid summers and cold winters.
Maintenance
Apply a UV-protective oil or clear sealer every 1–2 years. Or leave raw for a weathered, cottage-style look.
White Oak
Dense, ring-porous grain and naturally occurring tyloses make white oak nearly as water-resistant as teak at a fraction of the price. A North American hardwood that performs beautifully outdoors with proper finishing.
Maintenance
Apply an exterior oil finish on installation and re-apply annually. Store cushions indoors during winter.

Maintenance Guide
Caring for Your Outdoor Wood Furniture Through the Seasons
Solid wood outdoor furniture requires minimal care — far less than the painting, staining, and rust-treating that metal or composite furniture demands. Here's what to do each season.
Spring
Inspect joints and fasteners. Wipe down surfaces with a mild soap solution. Apply fresh oil or sealant to teak or cedar pieces before heavy use begins.
Summer
Keep furniture out of standing water. Use furniture covers during extended rainy periods. Tighten any loose hardware mid-season.
Fall
Clean thoroughly before storage or covering. Apply a final coat of oil or sealant. Move cushioned pieces indoors.
Winter
Most solid teak and cedar pieces can stay outdoors year-round in Ontario. Use breathable furniture covers to protect against ice and debris buildup.

Every Penwood outdoor piece is built by the same Mennonite craftspeople in Ontario who build our indoor furniture. The joinery is identical — mortise-and-tenon, hand-fitted. The material standard is identical — solid wood, full thickness, no engineered composites.
What changes for outdoor pieces is the hardware and the finish. We use marine-grade stainless steel fasteners throughout, eliminating the rust streaks that plague lesser outdoor furniture. Our outdoor pieces use exterior-rated oil finishes and UV-blocking sealants applied by hand, coat by coat.
The result is outdoor furniture that carries the same 30-year warranty expectation as our indoor home furniture collection — just built to perform in an infinitely harsher environment.
