Modern Mennonite Furniture
Every piece is custom crafted in Ontario from solid Canadian wood by Mennonite craftspeople, and sold through our own family-run showrooms.
Today most stores use the three names for the same piece. “Highboy” and “tallboy” are the older names for a chest of drawers that's taller than it is wide, and “tall dresser” is what most people search for today. You'll see all three names in our catalogue, along with lingerie chests, gentleman's chests and mule chests, which follow the same tall, stacked idea. The difference that matters is the drawer count and the height, so check the dimensions on each piece against the wall you have in mind.
Most of our highboys come in three solid woods: hard maple, wormy maple and red oak. The Cottage, Mission and Hygge pieces can be built in more species, with your choice of stain. Hard maple is dense and fine-grained, pale when it's left natural. Wormy maple shows the small marks left in the wood, and some people love it for exactly that. Red oak has an open, visible grain that takes a stain well. If you're matching a bed or nightstand you already own, our team can walk you through the options. Our wood species guide and stains and finishes pages show them side by side.
If the size you need isn't listed, ask. We build custom sizes, colours and configurations beyond what's on the site, so a highboy can be made narrower for a tight corner or taller for a room with high ceilings. Start with a custom furniture request or talk to our team at any showroom.
Penwood has been selling solid wood furniture in Ontario since 1993, built by more than 20 Mennonite artisans on farms in Southern Ontario. Every piece in this collection is solid wood. You buy a tall dresser once, and it outlasts the room you bought it for. Read more about what makes solid wood different.
You can talk through sizes, woods and stains with our team at any of our four showrooms: Morriston, Oakville, Ancaster and Collingwood. Find the showroom nearest you.
